Wellbeing For Me

CORE MH Curriculum in School

In school they have learnt about another acronym from Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families who shares 7 ways to wellbeing as ‘SMILERS’ and they learn what these letters stand for and reflect on what they mean to them.

Home Tasks

Discussion and activity tasks to do at home to support the learning from school.

Discussion

  • Start by recapping that they have an understanding of the term ‘wellbeing’.
  • Explain that wellbeing can refer to many things like:
  • Feeling good in your mind…your thoughts…and feelings,
  • Feeling good in your body and more.
  • Say that this isn’t a test, but can they remember what the NHS 5 ways to wellbeing are- that we talked about in March (answers: to…connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give).
  • Say that they are going to learn about the 7 ways to wellbeing today…

Activity: 7 Ways to wellbeing

This task introduces a child to the ‘7 ways to wellbeing’ and encourages them to reflect upon each.

What are the 7 ways to wellbeing:

  • Explain that acronyms are words where each letter stands for a certain word.
  • Say that for the 7 ways to wellbeing the word is ‘SMILERS’ and each letter stands for a word that is important to our wellbeing.
  • Give them time to think about what each of these words might be (help them out by giving them some of your ideas!
  • When you’ve decided scroll down this page to under the image to find out the answers…

Answer: What ‘SMILERS’ stands for:

  • Maybe you’d like to draw your own pictures of what the wellbeing words mean above. For example, look at the images below:

Make your own acronym:

  • I’m not sure how you feel about that SMILES acronym but I think I could have made it better, haha!
  • For example, I think the S should stand for sleep, the M for Maltesers (only joking!)…but I’m wondering if together you could make your own acronym that stands for what wellbeing is for you?
  • For example, this would be mine: CHILL

‘CHILL’:

  • Use your mood journal to jot down ideas and then come up with an acronym.
  • Maybe other members of the family can contribute to this and you can display the word somewhere in your house as a reminder of what’s important to you related to your family’s wellbeing.

🐸 F.R.O.G. = for how to deal with big feelings and help your wellbeing:

  • Feel it
  • Reflect on it
  • Open up
  • Get support

🧠 B.R.A.I.N. = for wellbeing in the ‘now’:

  • Breathe
  • Regulate
  • Ask for help
  • Imagine solutions
  • Notice your body

🐘 S.T.O.M.P. = for wellbeing in panic:

  • Stop and breathe
  • Tell someone
  • Observe your thoughts
  • Make a plan
  • Pick a sense to focus on.

This strengthens the family bond and allows you and your child to express more about what wellbeing means to you both and encourages creativity in making your own acronym.
